Massachusetts' landmark 2006 health-care law required the state to offer limited-benefit plans for young adults on its insurance exchange, but those plans will be eliminated in 2014 because of the new federal health-care reform law, The Sun has learned.
The federal regulations, starting in 2014, will prohibit insurers from offering health plans that cap the amount of annual coverage provided. Limited-benefit plans are much less expensive than plans with more generous coverage, which means the premiums for new plans offered to thousands of young adults in Greater Lowell and the state are expected to increase substantially.
